The other day, a friend of mine emailed me an interesting article about employee retention. The article goes into how even new entrants into the industry are job hopping into bigger salaries and are only spending only a few months, weeks, or even days at an employer. From the context of the article, a company is probably better off without those employees who jump ship every other week, but it does underline the importance and need of retaining top talent.
I also stumbled across the top 10 reasons employees leave their jobs. Below are at least 6 of the 10 that SEMs have been guilty of doing:
1. Management demands that one person do the jobs of two or more people, resulting in longer days and weekend work.
2. Management puts a freeze on raises and promotions, when an employee can easily find a job earning 20-30 percent more somewhere else.
3. Management constantly reorganizes, shuffles people around, and changes direction constantly.
4. Management shows favoritism and gives some workers better offices, trips to conferences, etc.
5. Management promotes someone who lacks training and/or necessary experience to supervisor, alienating staff and driving away good employees.
6. Management creates a rigid structure and then allows departments to compete against each other while at the same time preaching teamwork and cooperation.
Not all agencies treat their employees this way - and this being a high growth industry, even the ones that do will continue to grow. However, their growth will most likely be outpaced by their competitors and as their best employees leave, they will lose their greatest asset, the knowledge and expertise of those people.
